The Fruit of the Spirit -Gentleness
By Louie Marsh, 9-5-2018

Intro:   Give-a-way done – Chuck and Lynne Clements are the winners – congratulations.

Next week – Lord willing – a new kind of show. Watchman Nee – a brief history of his life and ministry and then we’ll be going through one of his books, Sit, Walk. Stand. I’ll also recommend a few other of his books and probably warn you off a few as well.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)

1) I need to LEARN what gentleness really is.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)

  • The Holy Spirit GROWS it in my life

Used of horses that had been tamed.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29 (ESV)

Jesus said he was gentle

There is no gentleness without HUMILITY.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5 (ESV)

Gentleness flows out of a humble heart – so Paul got two words in one here – also you can’t have gentleness without self-control.

“Meekness is essentially a true view of oneself, expressing itself in attitude and conduct with respect to others…The man who is truly meek is the one who is truly amazed that God and man can think of him as well as they do and treat him as well as they do.” – Dr. Lloyd-Jones

Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength. Saint Francis de Sales

Only the weak are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong. Leo Buscaglia

Of course, when I say that human nature is gentleness, it is not 100 percent so. Every human being has that nature, but there are many people acting against their nature, being false. Dalai Lama

Good directors can bring certain things out of you, with their intensity or gentleness or sensitivity or understanding. They can make an actor feel he can do no wrong. Robert De Niro

If zeal had been appropriate for putting humanity right, why did God the Word clothe himself in the body, using gentleness and humility in order to bring the world back to his Father? Isaac of Nineveh

Isaac of Nineveh also remembered as Saint Isaac the Syrian, Abba Isaac, Isaac Syrus and Isaac of Qatar was a 7th-century Church of the East Syriac Christian bishop and theologian best remembered for his written works on Christian asceticism

2) I can be gentle because of the AUTHORITY given me by Jesus.

“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’” Matthew 21:5 (ESV)

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)

3) I can be gentle because of Jesus example of being a SERVANT.

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. John 13:3-5 (ESV)

 4) I can be gentle because of the GRACE of Jesus.

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 (ESV)
