Disciple Up # 60
Fruit of the Spirit #4 – Patience
By Louie Marsh, 6-13-2018

Welcome to the Disciple Empowering Podcast!

Quotes On Patience:

“There is nothing which so certifies the genuineness of a man’s faith as his patience and his patient endurance, his keeping on steadily in spite of everything.” – Martyn Lloyd-Jones

“A blessed spirit is a mould ever more and more patient of the bright metal poured into it, a body ever more completely uncovered to the meridian blaze of the spiritual sun.” -C.S. Lewis

“If I have made any improvement in the sciences, it is owing more to patient attention than to anything beside.” – Isaac Newton

“There is no love of God without patience, and no patience without lowliness and sweetness of spirit.” – John Wesley

“Patience is the companion of wisdom.” – Augustine

1) When I lose my peace then I need PATIENCE

22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, …Galatians 5:22 (ESV)

  • From two words μακρός, LONG   & θυμός, SOUL

Old versions translate it “Longsuffering is that quality of self-restraint in the face of provocation which does not hastily retaliate or promptly punish; it is the opposite of anger,

  • I can be patient when I rely on GOD’S MERCY.

6  The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, Exodus 34:6 (ESV)

20  because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 1 Peter 3:20 (ESV)

2) This fruit keeps me from QUITTING MY MINISTRY.

  • Without patience I will FAIL TO ENDURE to the end.

3  remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 1:3 (ESV)

22  and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Matthew 10:22 (ESV)

  • Patience is necessity if I am to fulfill my MINISTRY

14  And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 (ESV)

The Disciple Up Low Down on the Importance of Patience

3) How should I HANDLE my anger?

25  Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26  Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27  and give no opportunity to the devil. Ephesians 4:25-27 (ESV)

  • Speak the truth lovingly without regard to the CONSEQUENCES

15  but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; Ephesians 4:15 (ASV)

Don’t be afraid of people getting angry with you – don’t give into the fear of men.

14  But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 1 Peter 3:14 (ESV)

  • RECOGNIZE the power of anger.

5  And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. Mark 3:5 (ESV)

  • UNDERSTAND it’s not always sinful to be angry.

14  In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15  And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16  And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” 17  His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” John 2:14-17 (ESV)

  • Deal with my anger quickly.

17  Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18  If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19  Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Romans 12:17-19 (ESV)

Discernment & A 54 Million Dollar Jet
By Louie Marsh, 6-6-2018

D- Day Anniversary, 74 years ago today the invasion of France by the Allies began

1  Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 1 Timothy 4:1 (ESV)

Discernment Scriptures

1  Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2  By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3  and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 1 John 4:1-3 (ESV)

3  But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4  For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 (ESV)

How do you discern?

Amazing how we draw a straight line from discernment to how we FEEL about something. There is no basis in Scripture for this jump.

Not that it won’t show up in your feelings, just that it normally should have more than that.

This is the Primary Way To Discern:

19  Do not quench the Spirit. 20  Do not despise prophecies, 21  but test everything; hold fast what is good. 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 (ESV)

16  As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. 17  She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” 18  And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. 19  But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. 20  And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. 21  They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.” Acts 16:16-21 (ESV)

 Disciple Up #58
Making Spiritual Memorials
By Louie Marsh, 5-30-2018

Memorial:

1 : serving to preserve remembrance : commemorative. 2 : of or relating to memory.

Memorial Day:

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

People have always done this – look at all the monuments in history. See how they often end up commemorating something different than the designers wanted them too – ie. The pyramids.

We all need memorials and days in our lives to reflect upon, learn from and preserve our own spiritual growth.

This was done a lot in the Bible:

14 “This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast. Exodus 12:14 (ESV)

6 that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ 7 then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.” Joshua 4:6-7 (ESV)

1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, 2 a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God. 3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” 4 And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter. 6 He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.” 7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him, Acts 10:1-7 (ESV)

19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19 (ESV)

Memorial Quotes: Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/memorial

Here is also to be noted, that the cause of the institution was to be a memorial, to testify that Christ’s body was given, and his blood shed for us. – William Tyndale

For famous men have the whole earth as their memorial. – Pericles

Since it is not granted to us to live long, let us transmit to posterity some memorial that we have at least lived. E. Joseph Cossman

Letters are among the most significant memorial a person can leave behind them. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The Disciple Up Low Down On Making Memorials

This is the Disciple Up Low Down on the Making of Memorials.

If you’ve ever been to Washington DC then you’ve probably seen at least some of the memorials there. I’ve been blessed enough to have gone several times and have seen most of them. The two that struck me most forcefully were the Lincoln Memorial and the World War Two Memorial. Of course having the pleasure to visit the World War Two Memorial with my father who was a veteran of that war made that first occasion special indeed.

That town is full of memorials as are many cities and towns across the world. I’ve seen memorials in the islands of the Pacific (indeed I had the privilege of helping to dedicate one to the members of the 2nd Raiders who were beheaded on Kwajalein years ago) in South East Asia, Spain and across the United States. I know there are thousands of others as well.

Mankind has a drive to create these things because we don’t want what we have done, or what our loved ones have done, to be forgotten. We hate the idea of that sacrifice and service passing unknown into history even as we know that the vast majority of all such service and sacrifice will be forgotten in a mere generation or two.

This offends both our pride and our love so we build and teach and write books and make movies all designed to make memories. But in the end we know that most, if not all, of what we memorialize will be forgotten in the mists of time.

But such is the human spirit that despite knowing this we still strive. There is good and bad in this of course.

The good is that we don’t give up and that we do seek to remember honorable service. This is as it should be. The Bible reminds us to honor those who serve. Listen to how Paul the Apostle speaks of two men who are all but forgotten: 17 I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have made up for your absence, 18 for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such people. 1 Corinthians 16:17-18 (ESV)

The downside to all this is our egos naturally. Look at the massive pyramids which are nothing but monuments to a Pharaoh’s massive ego. Many of them still stand today, but who can name the Pharaoh’s who so proudly built them? Not many.

Yes, glory is fleeting and our lives are like the flowers, here today and gone tomorrow. But while we live it is good to remember and honor those who serve or have served. It is even better to honor those who serve or have served the Kingdom of God. And it is best to remember, honor and serve the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, our Savior Jesus, who alone is worthy of all honor and praise.

And that’s the Disciple Up Low Down on the Making of Memorials.

57 Disciple Up Show Notes
Contending for the Faith #1
False Faith & The Thought Police
By Louie Marsh, 5-23-2018

What Contending for Faith Episodes will be:

3  Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4  For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. Jude 1:3-4 (ESV)

6  I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7  not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8  But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9  As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. 10  For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 1:6-10 (ESV)

These episodes aren’t just teaching Scripture but looking at what the world around us is saying on a variety of topics and issues and then applying Scripture to that.

http://slideplayer.com/slide/6299785/

This appears to be one slide from a sermon which is actually supporting the validity of Scripture and the identity of Jesus. So apparently this slide is a summation of the wrong approach to Jesus.

Nevertheless it deserves to be looked at closely.

Disciple Up # 56
The Fruit of the Spirit – Peace
By Louie Marsh, 5-16-2018

Where We’ve Been So Far…

  • The Fruit of the Spirit is love. – Pic of Orange
  • To become like Jesus I must CHOOSE SPIRIT over my old nature (flesh).
  • The Fruit of the Spirit is His fruit and comes by Grace.
      • Joy is having God’s PERSPECTIVE on life.
      • Joy doesn’t waiver because IT’S A REACTION TO GOD’S UNCHANGING GRACE.

1) Peace is not just absence of conflict, it’s about WHOLENESS.

22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace… Galatians 5:22 (ESV)

23  Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (ESV)

The New Testament Greek word most often translated as “peace” is eirene. It has the sense of “joining what had previously been separated or disturbed.” Thus, it frequently is used to signify “setting at one; quietness; and rest.” The familiar greeting, shalom. Though it is also generally translated as a single word like peace, rest, favor, safe, health, welfare and prosperity, it has, as the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia states, “a basic meaning of totality or completeness including fulfillment, maturity, soundness, and wholeness.”

  • Peace is a GIFT Jesus gives to me.

27  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27 (ESV)

  • Peace in Jesus doesn’t always MAKE SENSE to me.

7  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 (ESV)

Peace Quotes:  Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/topics/peace

“All we are saying is give peace a chance” – John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band

Share your smile with the world. It’s a symbol of friendship and peace. Christie Brinkley

Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means. Ronald Reagan

To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace. George Washington

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/inner-peace

“Nothing external to you has any power over you.”  ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

“We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” ― Dalai Lama XIV

2) As a follower of Jesus I ALREADY HAVE the peace of God.

1  Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:1 (ESV)

  • I am a child of God & he LOVES ME UNCONDITIONALLY.

1  There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2  For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2 (ESV)

Being forgiven by Jesus I STAND on this objective truth.

3  Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 1:3 (ESV)

3) What should I do if I don’t FEEL FORGIVEN?

  • IMMERSE myself in Scripture.

5  For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6  But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” Matthew 9:5-6 (ESV)

  • IGNORE MY FEELINGS & go with the facts of Scripture.

7  for we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)

16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17 (ESV)

  • JUST WAIT my feelings will follow my faith eventually.

16  But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18  And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 (ESV)

  • RESOLVE to make Jesus my Lord, NOT my feelings!

4  Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? Romans 2:4 (ESV)

Disciple Up #53
Fruit of the Spirit Joy #2
By Louie Marsh, 4-25-2018

Last Time:

To become like Jesus I must CHOOSE SPIRIT over my old nature (flesh).

The Fruit of the Spirit is His fruit and comes by Grace.

1) SEE the relationship between Joy and Grace.

  • Both words come from the same root in Greek
  • Grace – Charis and joy Chara come from Char
  • Char indicates something that PRODUCES WELL BEING.
  • Charis indicates SOMETHING FREELY GIVEN that produces well being.

8  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9  not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV)

  • Chara is the INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE OR EXPRESSION of that well being.

4  Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God. Psalm 43:4 (ESV)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy…Galatians 5:22a (ESV)

Joy Quotes:

Read more: https://www.christianquotes.info/quotes-by-topic/quotes-about-joy/#ixzz5DYLUVaiR

Sorrow does not take away, but adds to the Christian’s joy.” – Lester Roloff

“Man cannot live without joy; therefore when he is deprived of true spiritual joys it is necessary that he become addicted to carnal pleasures.” – Thomas Aquinas

“When the heart is full of joy, it always allows its joy to escape. It is like the fountain in the marketplace; whenever it is full it runs away in streams, and so soon as it ceases to overflow, you may be quite sure that it has ceased to be full. The only full heart is the overflowing heart.”  – Charles Spurgeon

“There is no joy in the world like the joy of bringing one soul to Christ.”  – William Barclay

“The world looks for happiness through self-assertion. The Christian knows that joy is found in self-abandonment. ‘If a man will let himself be lost for My sake,’ Jesus said, ‘he will find his true self.'”

– Elisabeth Elliot

 2) UNDERSTAND how it works.

  • Joy is having God’s PERSPECTIVE on life.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, James 1:2

Like Love – Joy is NOT an emotion or feeling, but it’s often thought of that way because it PRODUCES feelings, we have an emotional response to God’s Grace when we see it.

Joy doesn’t waiver because IT’S A REACTION TO GOD’S UNCHANGING GRACE.

8  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 (ESV)

3  Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 1:3 (ESV)

9  As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:9 (ESV)

Therefore in difficult times I can be joyful because I’M FOCUSED ON GOD’S UNCHANGING GRACE.

1  We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2  for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 2 Corinthians 8:1-2 (ESV)

11  We ask him to strengthen you by his glorious might with all the power you need to patiently endure everything with joy. Colossians 1:11 (GW)

3) REALIZE the benefits Joy brings into your life.

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Neh. 8:10

4) DECIDE to take that first big step towards joy.

2  Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3  for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4 (ESV)

·       I need to make a QUALITY DECISION to view life from God’s Perspective.

“To be a leader, to rule, to command, used of military leaders, church leaders.

  • To account, to think.
  • So it means to lead yourself to a decision
  • Prefix to the word – “not resting on one’s inner feelings or sentiment, but on the due consideration of external grounds, the weighing and comparing of facts, deliberate and careful judgment.”

So James is saying we need to make a once for all quality decision to view life from God’s Perspective.

And, Possibly the Dumbest Thing Ever Said About Love –

Love means never having to say your sorry.

1) To become like Jesus I must CHOOSE SPIRIT over flesh.

16  But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 (ESV)

  • To live by the Spirit I must CONSTANTLY CHOOSE Spirit over my old nature.
  • For this transformation to happen I must be committed to it 100%.

17  For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Galatians 5:17 (ESV)

Greek has one word for both Spirit and flesh. It means a strong desire. God wants to us to be very passionate about our faith, but that passion must come from the Spirit not the flesh, otherwise disaster will occur as we’ve seen so many times.

15  And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. Luke 22:15 (ESV)

2) Real transformation comes when I TRUST GOD’S GRACE, not works.

19  Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20  idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21  envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love… Galatians 5:19-22a (ESV)

  • The flesh makes me work, as a SLAVE TO MY DESIRES.
  • The Spirit produces change in us as a result of GOD’S GRACE.

4  But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5  even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6  and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7  so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:4-7 (ESV)

 QUOTES:

“Fruit is always the miraculous, the created; it is never the result of willing, but always a growth. The fruit of the Spirit is a gift of God, and only He can produce it. They who bear it know as little about it as the tree knows of its fruit. They know only the power of Him on whom their life depends”
― Dietrich BonhoefferThe Cost of Discipleship

“A man does not have the character of God if he does not have the fruit of the Holy Spirit.”
― Sunday Adelaja

3) All you need is love?

22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV)

  • I believe the fruit of the Spirit is
  • The other qualities in this list help us DEFINE what love is.

4  Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5  or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6  it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8  Love never ends… 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a (ESV)

4) You know you are Spirit filled when you have GROWING FRUIT!

15  Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16  making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18  And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19  addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20  giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21  submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:15-21 (ESV)
