We Should Use the Model Jesus Gave Us

“This, then, is how you should pray:  Matthew 6:9a (NIV)

The Six Parts of Prayer

1) I Begin by HONORING GOD.

…”‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Matthew 6:9b (NIV)

Two Kinds Of Praise

  • PRAISE – Praising God for WHO He is
  • THANKSGIVING– Praising God for WHAT He’s done.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! Psalm 100:4 (ESV)

2) Purpose: I Commit Myself 100% to THE LORD.

10  Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10 (ESV)

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 (ESV)

3) Provision: I Ask God To MEET MY NEEDS.

11  Give us this day our daily bread, Matthew 6:11 (ESV)

  • What needs can I pray about? ALL OF THEM

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.  Phil. 4:19

You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. James 4:2 (ESV)

4) Pardon: I Ask God To REMOVE MY GUILT.

12  and forgive us our debts… Matthew 6:12a (ESV)

13  bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Colossians 3:13 (ESV)

5) People: I Pray For  MY ENEMIES.

12  ,,,as we also have forgiven our debtors. Matthew 6:12b (ESV)

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 1 Timothy 2:1 (ESV)

6) Protection: I Ask For GUIDANCE & DELIVERANCE.

13  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Matthew 6:13 (ESV)

The Bottom Line!

Prayer Not Only CHANGES Things – It Changes ME And Brings About  GOD’S WILL On Earth!

Reading From: Getting Real, Chapter Eight
Life Is Tough and Then Ya Die, Ps. 39
By Louie Marsh

1) I must STAY CONNECTED.

I said, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.” Psalm 39:1

 ACTING RELIGIOUS

Do not be overrighteous, neither be overwise– why destroy yourself? Do not be overwicked, and do not be a fool– why die before your time? It is good to grasp the one and not let go of the other. The man who fears God will avoid all extremes.  Eccles. 7:16-18

  • MISUNDERSTANDING GOD
  • GUILT

2) AVOID the anguish of isolation.

But when I was silent and still, not even saying anything good, my anguish increased. My heart grew hot within me, and as I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: Psalm 39:2-3

  • LACK OF GOOD WORDS
  • INNER ANGUISH
  • CRY OUT EVENTUALLY

“Mum’s the word,” I said, and kept quiet. But the longer I kept silence The worse it got— my insides got hotter and hotter. My thoughts boiled over; I spilled my guts. Psalm 39:2-3 (Mes)

3) ASK GOD for the proper perspective.

“Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. Psalm 39:4

4) MEDITATE on how fleeting life is.

You have made my days a mere handbreadth;  the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man’s life is but a breath.  Selah  Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro:  He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.  Psalm 39:5-6

5) SET MY HOPE on God alone.

“But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. Psalm 39:7

6) ADMIT & DEAL WITH my sins.

Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools.  I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand. You rebuke and discipline men for their sin;  you consume their wealth like a moth– each man is but a breath.  Selah Psalm 39:8-11

7) GET BACK to God!

“Hear my prayer, O Lord,  listen to my cry for help;  be not deaf to my weeping. For I dwell with you as an alien, a stranger, as all my fathers were. Psalm 39:12

8) CHOOSE to rejoice in the Lord!

Look away from me, that I may rejoice again  before I depart and am no more.”  Psalm 39:13

Give me a break, cut me some slack before it’s too late and I’m out of here.”  Psalm 39:13
